It’s a misconception. Actually, no where mentioned that 4 are halal or haram in Islam. It was a verse linked to one incident of war where Allah stated that you can marry either 1, 2, 3 and 4. It was related to the widows, girls left without guardians and so on. So that verse was related to the war and not today’s world. You can marry more women only if you can balance your life with all of your wives equally and if you can’t than do not marry more then one.
