I'm not saying these reasons are why YOU should cull chickens in your flock, I'm just sharing our reasons 🫶🏻 We can't afford to have a bunch of pet chickens, so we make these decisions based on production, temperament, health concerns, and age. 1. Once a chicken jumps or finds a way under the fence, it's almost guaranteed they will do it again and teach others. 😅 2. For us the point of keeping chickens is to provide eggs for our family. Hens that aren't converting feed to eggs well are just too expensive to keep. 3. We want to keep a strong flock that doesn't need intervention often. By keeping only those with hardy traits, we can ensure that chicks hatched will most likely be the same. 4. Roosters are great, but aggressive roosters are dangerous - especially around children. The first sign of aggression...and they have to hit the crockpot. 5. Because we don't have harsh winters to slow egg production down, our hens slow down their laying around 3 years old. We aim to have new chicks growing out when the older hens are 2, and then processing the older group sometime in year 3.
