Who else misses waking up early in the morning to the sounds of cicadas buzzing? Here in the U.S. where I’m located, these insects can be heard high up in the trees during the hot summer days. Cicadas produce their loud sounds through a special organ that only the males possess called a tymbal. For this reason, only male cicadas are capable of producing their infamous noises. The sounds that they expel is called stridulation, and it’s actually a mating call that the males will use to attract females. Each species of cicada has its own unique call and frequency that strictly attracts cicadas of the same species. The lifespan of cicadas can vary greatly depending on the particular species. However, out of the 3,000+ species of cicadas in the world, they all share the same exact lifecycle. As nymphs, most cicadas live around 3-5 years underground, with the exception of some living for 13 and 17 years underground! While under the soil, the nymphs use their piercing-sucking mouthparts called a rostrum to stab and suck the sap out of tree roots! During the summertime, the nymphs will emerge from out of the ground and will begin to enter their final transformation! Typically scaling a vertical surface like a tree or a fence, the nymphs molt out of their nymphal bodies and come out as adult cicadas. In their adult state, they now have the ability to fly and reproduce! *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio!
