@sweetbriarnaturecenter: When this tiny sparrow arrived at our wildlife hospital, hundreds of ticks were covering its eyes. We honestly didn’t know if we would find eyes underneath that enormous cluster of parasites. After hours of painstaking tick removal, we couldn’t believe what we saw… Eyes! And even more incredibly, this little sparrow could see. It took several days to carefully remove all of the tiny parasites, but we were thrilled when this little bird was finally healthy enough to return home. A huge thank you to the Good Samaritan who noticed this tiny feathered creature and cared enough to bring it to us for help. It truly takes a village to save wildlife. Want fewer ticks in your yard? Ticks thrive in shady, moist, overgrown areas. Make your yard less inviting by: • Keeping grass under 3 inches • Removing leaf litter, brush, and debris • Creating a 3-foot gravel or wood-chip barrier between your lawn and wooded areas • Keeping play areas and outdoor seating in sunny, open areas • Reducing wildlife attractants, especially around deer and rodents • Planting aromatic herbs such as lavender, rosemary, and sage • Considering natural tick-control options such as cedar oil or beneficial nematodes And remember, even a well-maintained yard can still have ticks. Always check yourself, your children, and your pets after spending time outdoors.
