Have you thought about doing some adjustable shelf options … that way should you get some bigger art or coffee table books you can accommodate a growing library

What about a bottom hinged door that opens to storage for blankets, pillows, etc in that empty space behind the backrest area?

Adding a removable faceplate to the front end could be a good way to access bulk storage in the cavity.

I'd suggest marking where the back of your head hits the wall instead. My aunt had a reading nook with built in shelves for books, etc and it was actually uncomfortable because there was no where to rest your head without it tipping into the shelf. Just a suggestion!

not sure if the extra storage is worth it but what if you design the paneling at the front to open in order to access inside.

14ish inch shelves gives plenty of room for larger books, or 10 will be plenty of she doesn't have any really tall books

I was just about to say, you’re missing an opportunity for secret storage behind those shelves where the cavity is empty. Exciting to hear you have that in the plan, like shelves that drop-down and bounce back up with the push of a secret button disguised somehow. (Thinking old castle secret doors and rooms type o thing) of course, I have no idea how that would be done, but I bet you have some things up your sleeve!
