@eliteathletesdevelopment: Pre-season is the biggest opportunity of the year to make meaningful physical adaptations📈 Once competitive fixtures begin, physical preparation has to constantly account for matchday readiness, accumulated fatigue, travel and the need to perform every weekend — often twice a week. Pre-season gives players something they rarely have during the season: More time to train, recover and adapt. With larger recovery windows between demanding sessions and fewer competitive demands, performance staff can apply greater training loads and chase physical qualities more aggressively. In the gym, this may mean: ⚡ Greater emphasis on force and power production
🏋️ Higher strength-training volumes and heavier loading
📐 Working through larger ranges of motion
📈 Taking selected exercises closer to muscular failure
🔄 Greater exposure to eccentric and high-force actions Developing maximal force capacity provides a foundation for many of the explosive actions seen in football — acceleration, sprinting, jumping, braking and changing direction. Pre-season provides an opportunity to build this capacity through heavier strength work before complementing it with higher-velocity movements such as loaded jumps, Olympic lift derivatives and plyometrics to improve how effectively that force can be expressed at speed. There is also greater opportunity to accumulate meaningful training volume. During the season, players may deliberately leave more repetitions in reserve or reduce total sets to limit residual fatigue before a match. In pre-season, selected exercises can be pushed closer to failure and performed through greater ranges of motion to provide a stronger stimulus for adaptations in strength, muscle architecture and tissue capacity. But the aim isn't simply to create as much fatigue as possible. The goal is to create enough stimulus to drive adaptation, provide sufficient recovery, and progressively increase the player's physical capacity. Once the season begins, much of physical preparation shifts towards maintaining qualities while keeping players available and fresh enough to perform. Pre-season is the window to build them.
