Large earthquakes are initially calculated from the first available seismic waves. Early solutions can change substantially as additional stations provide better recordings of the earthquake. Different agencies can also produce different results because they may use different: • seismic stations and network coverage • waveform-processing methods • earthquake-location algorithms • magnitude scales • seismic moment and source models The difference became particularly notable in this event. While SGC initially reported M6.7 and then M6.6, Geoscience Australia independently calculated M7.3. The two solutions also differed in depth and epicentral location. The latest SGC solution now reports M7.4 Mw, placing the event substantially above its earlier SGC magnitude estimates. 🌎 WIDELY FELT The earthquake generated widespread felt reports across Colombia, including Bogotá, with reports extending into Panama and neighbouring regions. The earthquake’s approximately 96-km depth is consistent with the event being felt across a broad region. 📌 CURRENT EAN STATUS M7.4 Mw — SGC, Manual Review Because the event has undergone such a substantial magnitude evolution, further revisions from international seismic agencies remain possible.
