WEEKLY VULNERABILITY ANALYSIS GitLab | CVE-2026-110264 Critical severity. Low EPSS. Now what? Monday covered GitLab's critical code-execution vulnerability. Today, the deeper question: how should defenders prioritize it when the severity rating and exploitation prediction look so different? CVSS AND EPSS ANSWER DIFFERENT QUESTIONS GitLab rates this flaw CVSS 3.1: 10.0. That describes technical severity, including the ability to exploit it without authentication or user interaction. The CIRCL snapshot shared on October 23 displayed EPSS at 0.51%. EPSS estimates the probability of exploitation activity in the wild over the next 30 days. It does not estimate the probability that your particular server will be compromised. These values can coexist. A vulnerability can have severe consequences while receiving a low exploitation prediction. EPSS changes daily; this figure is a historical snapshot. Do not multiply CVSS by EPSS to calculate risk. CVSS is not a monetary loss estimate or a probability. YOUR ENVIRONMENT CHANGES THE DECISION Consider two illustrative deployments: • An internet-facing GitLab instance with access to production deployment credentials. • An instance behind restricted network access with limited permissions and no production secrets. The CVE and base severity are identical. Exposure and potential business consequences differ. Both require remediation, but the first warrants especially urgent attention. Ask: • Can untrusted users reach the affected service? • What source code, credentials, and integrations could be exposed? • Could compromised access affect production deployments? • What would a loss of integrity or availability cost the organization? EVIDENCE HAS LIMITS The October 21 SSVC assessment recorded exploitation as “none” and automatable as “yes.” That is a dated evidence assessment, not assurance that attacks cannot occur. GitLab's detection rules can support investigation. Their existence alone does not establish an active campaign, and an absence of alerts does not prove an absence of compromise. VERIFY THE OUTCOME Confirm the patched version is running across affected nodes and replicas. For container deployments, verify deployed images, not just an updated build file. Review detection findings and investigate suspicious activity. Closing the vulnerability and assessing prior compromise are separate tasks. Use severity, exploit evidence, exposure, and business impact together. A low prediction is one input, not a reason to dismiss critical exposure.
