@profjohntfriedman: Even though society and culture aren’t the same thing, they’re deeply connected. If you had to explain the relationship between them in one sentence, what would you say? 👇 #Anthropology #Society #Culture #LearnOnTikTok #StudyTok

I agree, there is a lot of confusion on this. My students used to treat “culture” and “society” as synonyms too. The concepts are distinct but, of course, they do influence each other and that mutual influence seems to be where the confusion comes from. I used to tell my students that a way to think about is that if society is our patterns of interaction then culture is what those interactions mean. Change the meaning of, say, cousin-hood, then the entire web of interactions that we recognize as family likely changes. Another way is to think of society as a structure like syntax or sentence order in a language, and culture as semantics, the meanings of signs. One can change how we interpret the other but we can study each on its own for a deeper view of both.

What I find fascinating about culture is its “invisibility” from within. Ethnocentrism. Doxa. ‘Oh, THAT is a *cultural* food’ for example. ‘What I’m eating is just *regular* food.’
