Corporations fund campaigns, lobby lawmakers, shape legislation, and influence policy. Many political scientists argue the U.S. has functioned more like an oligarchy than a true representative democracy for years, a trend that accelerated after the 2008 financial crisis and was reinforced by the Citizens United decision in 2010. The next step isn't about creating free markets. It's about protecting concentrated wealth. That's where authoritarianism becomes useful. It protects the people and institutions already holding power.
