I'm currently in Crete. a country that obviously doesn't get a lot of rain. yet everywhere is green. the orange, lemon, lime, olive groves all have irrigation pipes to make sure the crops stay watered. the problem with the UK is we don't adapt. we don't cope with any extremes of weather, be it rain, sun or snow. we just continue on with the same tired infrastructure, same old way of farming, planting at exactly the same time as say 100 years ago. we are not a dry country by any stretch of the imagination. just rubbish at living day to day

I drive across Europe every summer, through countries like France and Italy that routinely see far less rainfall than we do in the UK, yet they still manage to grow crops. The difference is that they’ve adapted. You see huge irrigation systems and sprinklers watering entire fields because they know they can’t simply rely on rainfall. We’ve known for years that hotter, drier summers were becoming more likely in the UK, so why are we only acting surprised now that it’s happening? Agriculture has had to evolve throughout history, and it needs to evolve again. If farming practices rely heavily on weather patterns that are becoming less reliable, surely the answer has to be adapting those practices and investing in infrastructure, not just hoping next summer is wetter. I’m sorry, but you won’t get much sympathy from me for relying entirely on old practices that are becoming less feasible when we’ve had years of warning that the climate is changing.
