@bradallenwilliams: more than one mentor told me to “get out of the practice room sometimes” it’s worth stressing that this isn’t the usual “you’ve got to be a good hang offstage” take. the act of playing in a group (for an audience) has unspoken interpersonal dynamics that mirror the interpersonal dynamics of everyday life. and being “interested” is usually more important than being “interesting”
so many musicians are actually awful to hang out with 😭

Another great insight! I might also use the inverse of this at the next party I attend… e.g. “oh shit I’m totally overplaying”

community also means actually participating in your music scene. Going to shows, making real friends, and sharing music just bc you're excited about it. Not just networking for personal gain. People like you if yr genuine

i've had this semi-serious theory why succesful musicians tend to develop alcohol problems: in order to interact skillfully with drunks you need to be drunk.

This is a very articulate point on improvisational music. The confidence to not need to show off is integral in both.

Being in music has made me a more rounded, more healed and present person. I do get excited to talk about things I’m passionate about but finding that balance to listen what they have to say too. Just like what you were saying with the interpersonal stuff, like if a drummer learned some new techniques and they’re just throwing them everywhere through a song instead of sprinkling them in where it best serves the song. It’s a back and forth, there will be moments for you to shine, just like a solo in a song there’s the moments where say… there is a guitar solo. Of course the guitar is supposed to be the focus there. But the solo hits because it’s not just one giant guitar solo the whole song (well…)

This couldn’t be more true. My biggest leaps in musicianship have all been happening recently, and I attribute most of the progress to meeting other musicians at parties and through other social engagements. Coming into contact with new people, cultures, circles, and sounds goes hand in hand with musical expression 💪
