@jeremiahconboy: Wildfire smoke is once again reaching parts of the Northeast. As of August 10, the National Weather Service says smoke may be visible high above southern New England, including parts of Connecticut. Connecticut’s air is currently rated GOOD, with MODERATE conditions forecast—but that can change quickly if smoke begins mixing down toward ground level. This is NOT a declaration of a dangerous smoke emergency. It IS an early warning to pay attention. Smoke high in the atmosphere may only create hazy skies, filtered sunlight or colorful sunsets. Ground-level smoke is different. It contains microscopic PM2.5 particles that can travel deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. You do not have to see or smell smoke for it to affect the air you are breathing. WHO SHOULD BE ESPECIALLY CAREFUL? • People with asthma or COPD • People with heart disease • People with diabetes or chronic kidney disease • Anyone living with a chronic medical condition • Children and older adults • Pregnant people • Anyone who has previously reacted badly to smoke or air pollution Wildfire smoke may cause coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, irritated eyes, headaches, unusual fatigue or a rapid heartbeat. HOW TO PREPARE: ✅ Check the AQI before spending extended time outside. Do not judge air quality by how the sky looks. ✅ If the AQI reaches ORANGE—Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups—reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity. ✅ Keep prescribed medications and rescue inhalers available. Follow your doctor’s instructions and asthma or COPD action plan. ✅ During a smoke event, close windows and doors. Run air conditioning on RECIRCULATE and use a HEPA air purifier or an appropriate high-efficiency HVAC filter if available. ✅ Avoid creating additional indoor particles by smoking, vaping, burning candles, using fireplaces or frying food. ✅ If you must be outside in smoky conditions, a properly fitted NIOSH-approved N95 respirator provides better particle protection than a cloth mask, surgical mask or bandana. ✅ Never remain inside a dangerously hot home simply to avoid smoke. If you cannot keep your home both cool and clean, seek a cooling center or another air-conditioned location with filtered air. Contact your healthcare provider if you develop new or worsening breathing problems, persistent coughing, wheezing or symptoms that are not improving. Call 911 for severe trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, bluish lips or face, or possible symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. The new western Canadian wildfires do NOT currently guarantee another severe Northeast smoke event. Wind direction, altitude, weather and whether the smoke reaches ground level will determine what happens next. STAY ALERT. STAY AWARE. STAY PREPARED.
