It just looks like the Cartographer has zero affect on where the Sailor goes. So one guy is doing math and busywork in the dark, having no affect on the game, while the other guy gets to sail around the open world and interact with stuff. Why would anyone ever want to play as the Cartographer?

my wife and I are far more interested in the puzzle aspect of the cartographer than plain Jane boat action game. Will need a way to swap for sure cuz both of us will be fighting over the cartographer.
