@author_matthewflagler: What if democracy isn’t a finished product? Most Canadians grow up assuming that elections are the only way a democracy can work. But around the world, countries are experimenting with new ideas—from Citizens’ Assemblies to something called sortition, where ordinary citizens are randomly selected to help study important public issues. Does that replace elections? No. But it raises an important question: Can democracy evolve? In this first episode of Can We Build a Better Canada?, we explore one of the oldest—and newest—ideas in democratic governance. Not to tell you what to think. Simply to ask whether our political system could work even better. #canada #sortition #politicalreform #democracy

I like the idea but with the politicians still having ultimate decision power the wealthy can still buy federal, provincial and municipal policies. The UCP have clearly demonstrated they will push their agenda through while completely ignoring what alberta voters overwhelmingly say “no” to.

Love the idea of citizen assemblies! Reforming the Senate - not abolishing it but requiring senators to show up and do the work - would be helpful too.
