Charlie and a young Black student got into a debate over an uncomfortable question: are Americans judged by different standards depending on their race? Charlie argued that certain criticisms of Black culture can be said openly by Black Americans, while a White person making the exact same argument may immediately be labeled racist. The student pushed back and argued that the issue is more complicated than simply saying one race “can” say something and another cannot.
