@humblemechanic: Good technicians are leaving the automotive industry at alarming rates… what do you think are some ways we could fix it? For starters, I think it goes beyond just flatrate and pay alone. #mechanic #jobs #pay #career #bluecollar
Left 4 years ago and never looked back. This problem will likely not be solved in my lifetime. It’s systemic.

Master certified on 2 luxury brands and I make my weeks paycheck in one day on side work…..labor times somehow keep going down but the processes for the jobs keep getting more complicated, only answer is to either drop flat rate entirely or bump up labor times

Exactly why I went into the material handling technician side. Don’t need half the tools, company vehicle, gas card and hourly pay that’s pretty dang competitive!

All but one of my friends have all walked away from being a mechanic. Horrible career choice. New vehicles are absolutely garbage.

my final straw leaving VW was on a warranty head gasket replacement on a Taos (shocker) I was back flagged 6 hours because I put the labor op for r&r turbocharger (listed as a required step in service manual) and it got kicked for it being "lumped in the complete head r&r labor op". It was the only action the service manual required that was not lumped in. And even the Foreman agreed that I made the right call, yet I still ate 6 hours of my time. called it right there.

No. It's because of the pay. Flat rate is a scam and techs should NOT have to purchase their own tools.
