Oil palm tree ( Elaeis guineensis)is the predominant vegetation in Eastern Nigeria. In the days of regional government in the Nigerian first Republic when agriculture was the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy, oil palm and it produces gave Eastern Nigeria and its government comparative advantage in agriculture while the western Nigeria was inclined for cocoa, kolanut, rubber and other forests produce;Middle-Western Nigeria was inclined for timber and rubber production; Northern Nigeria was inclined for groundnut, cotton etc (Groundnut pyramid). The then Eastern Nigeria comprised of today’s Imo, Abia,Ebonyi,Enugu,Anambra, CrossRiver, Akwaibom,Rivers, Bayelsea,Delta was part of it until the creation of Mid-West in 1963. The then Primier of Eastern Nigeria established so many farm settlements and palm plantation including ADA-Palm in Imo State, The Rivers Palm in Ubima Rivers State and other palm plantation in CrossRiver state. The place of oil-palm in the economy of Eastern Nigeria cannot be downplayed. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka was built from the proceeds of oil Palm and its produce. In the spirit of true/fiscal Federalism as enshrined by the Nigerian Constitution, State of the Federation should be in charge of their destinies economically on the basis of comparative advantage. The Federating States should be economically viable and powerful more than the Central/Federal Government. The federal government should be economically dependent on federating State and not otherwise; this will engender healthy economic competition amongst federating State and enhance economic bouyancy in terms GDP other than States relying on the Federal Government for stipends called “ Monthly Allocation “ from the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). If Subnational/federating States are made in charge of their destiny economically then every state Governor will sit up and pursue a viabrant and realistic economic programme because no one is coming to help you and free stipends anywhere.
