@accuweather: A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia on Monday morning, injuring people and forcing frantic evacuations from damaged buildings. The magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck at 7:34 a.m. local time, with the epicenter located about 250 miles (400 km) west of the capital city of Bogota, according to the USGS. Shaking was felt as far away as Ecuador, Venezuela and Panama, with the quake being followed up by a magnitude 5.0 aftershock. Initial reports from the Choco Gov. Nubia Córdoba confirmed that people were injured, although the number of people injured remains unknown.

Do you guys not know how earthquakes work? 😭 Earthquakes have absolutely nothing to do with God being angry or punishing people. They are a natural geological process caused by the movement of the Earth. The Earth’s crust is broken into massive tectonic plates that are constantly moving, even though we usually can’t feel that movement. Along faults, rocks can become stuck because of friction while stress continues building up. Eventually, that stress becomes too great, the rocks suddenly slip, and the stored energy is released as seismic waves. Those waves travel through the Earth and cause the shaking we experience as an earthquake. Earthquakes can also happen away from the edges of tectonic plates because there are faults within the plates themselves. Depending on the earthquake’s depth, magnitude, and geology of the surrounding area, the shaking can sometimes be felt hundreds of miles away. It’s literally the Earth doing what the Earth has naturally been doing for millions of years. It is geology and plate tectonics, not evidence that God is angry with anyone. 😭
