@fiveoaksresearch: A drake wood duck slinking through a moist-soil wetland unit after duck season. Woodies are one of the few waterfowl species that are year-round residents here in Arkansas, with many nesting in natural cavities throughout our bottomland hardwood forests and cypress brakes. But the birds we see during fall and winter aren’t all locals. Many wood ducks migrate into Arkansas from breeding areas farther north, adding to our resident population each year. It’s a good reminder that even a duck we associate so closely with southern swamps and flooded timber depends on habitat across a much larger landscape throughout its annual cycle.
