There’s just one problem: the test doesn’t appear to be real. The footage has been reposted as an actual ballistic test, but versions of the imagery identify it as CGI concept art. There’s no verified manufacturer, military report, or documented 20mm test connected to the video. But the real technology is getting surprisingly close. San Francisco robotics company Foundation is developing the Phantom MK-1, a real humanoid designed for defense and dangerous operations. According to TIME, Foundation has around $24 million in U.S. military research contracts and has demonstrated Phantom handling firearms. Two Phantom robots were also taken to Ukraine in February 2026 for a pilot demonstration focused on carrying supplies and reducing soldiers’ exposure to enemy fire. Foundation has since showcased autonomous walking, heavy payloads and even a mortar demonstration. So no — there’s no evidence a humanoid robot actually survived a 20mm cannon test. But maybe that’s what makes the fake footage so convincing: real humanoid robots are advancing fast enough that something straight out of Terminator no longer looks completely impossible.
