She noticed strange particles floating in the blood that looked like tiny crystals. Moments later, the medical staff began to drop. One by one, doctors and nurses fainted, suffered tremors, or experienced temporary paralysis. The ER was evacuated, and 23 staff members became ill, with five requiring hospitalization. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory later proposed a terrifying chemical theory: Ramirez had been using DMSO (a solvent) for pain relief. The oxygen administered in the ambulance likely converted it into DMSO2 (which crystallizes in blood), and the electric shocks from the defibrillator converted that into DMSO4—a powerful chemical nerve agent similar to military-grade gas, created entirely inside her own body.
