@myenglishcountrycottage: Preserving the past but with modern comforts in our old cottage guest bedroom. This was an old Stableblock that we converted into two bedrooms and a bathroom for guests. We tried to continue the character of the building, using stable doors, reclaimed brick floors and cladding the walls with wide wooden planks. It needed to be light and airy so I whitewashed every room and picked light ditsy floral designs that would complement the simple scheme rather than shouting and detracting from the calm. My initial inspiration was Rachel Ashwell's Shabby chic style but as with my entire life, I couldn't help adding to my simple scheme with a few more florals and a bit more colour but I think that is what makes a room comfortable: taking a few design principles, making sure the room is harmonious and adding touches of your own personality.
