I try to do this with my chores: instead of being like, “ughh, I don’t want to go mow the lawn” l try to remind myself that I’m lucky to have a house with a nice lawn that needs to be mowed. This works for all chores including paying bills even though that seems crazy. I’m thankful to have bills to pay for services I’m grateful to have.

to answer your question, we cannot immediately relate to what we haven't experienced, we never live like the people 100 years ago, what we've experienced is our baseline. Humans will naturally look up and wanting to go up from their baseline, sometimes so much so that we forget that our baseline is already good enough, and we forget to be grateful for it
