I've been to see the Big Piece three times now, and it's still one of the most breathtaking experiences I've ever had. There's a change in the atmosphere when you walk into the hallway just before it comes into view... there's a heaviness that settles into the air the closer you get.

We should get a tiny submarine, maybe one controlled by a gaming controller, and dive down to explore this!

That’s a gravesite. Some things should just be laid to rest and not disturbed.

Ballard's technique to find the shipwreck was AMAZING. When investigating Scorpion and Thresher, the two nuclear submarines he'd been sent by the US Navy to investigate, he realized that ships that implode create large debris fields, and with Titanic, it tore in two at the surface, which would have spilled debris for miles after being caught in the currents as it sank over two and a half miles to the ocean floor. Therefore, he didn't need to find the wreck first, but the debris. So he used a search grid in a zig zag pattern, each line being about a mile apart, to search the sea floor with a sled camera. They found a few tiny pieces of debris first, but the first thing identifiable as being from Titanic, the first major piece, was a boiler. (Fun fact: the line "I'll be God damned" in the film Titanic is a nod to the words Ballard said after seeing the boiler and realizing what they'd found.) They then followed the debris like breadcrumbs until they came across a "wall" of metal. They followed that up and boom. History. 🥰

I can’t understand how this is the first time I’m hearing that they tried to raise part of the ship and that a piece is in a Vegas hotel. I’ve never heard that before and it blows my mind.

I’ve had an obsession since I was as young as I could remember about Titanic. I got to see the big piece at Luxor in Las Vegas back in 2021, and honestly is one of my single most favorite memories. Brought me almost to tears that I was able to literally see a piece of the ship that I was always so obsessed with and wished I could see myself one day. Here are some photos of it. Also the inside view which most people do not show.

As a millennial who saw the movie in the theater at the ripe age of 11… I get misty eyed every time I see the wreckage. It absolutely shatters my heart to know that one day it won’t even be recognizable down there. 😩

Still kill’s me seeing video of them celebrating when they found the boiler, then someone said “She sinks in 20 minutes” because they found her at 2am…

I’m going there next month! This company I found called OceanGate has intimate, 5-person tours. Takes you right up to the wreckage! It’s going to be epic! Worth every penny for sure! CEO is a little eccentric, but it’s cool, he stands behind the quality of the submersible we’ll be going down in! He’s even coming with us! I’ll post a video of my experience afterwards! 👍
