@motocomms: That tone in the video is HF radiofax (WEFAX) a decades-old system the U.S. Coast Guard still runs for mariners at sea. This one's coming from station NMF in Boston, broadcasting on 9110 kHz, one of several frequencies they run around the clock. The signal encodes an actual image surface analysis charts, wind/wave forecasts, ice charts as an audio tone that shifts pitch for black and white. Software decodes it and draws the image in line by line, same way a fax machine works, just over shortwave instead of a phone line. This is what ships have relied on for weather info long before GPS chartplotters ever existed, and it's still broadcasting today, same as it's been for decades. A signal that just keeps going, whether anyone's listening or not. Mine came in a little rough tonight some slant from tuning, a signal dropout partway through but that's part of learning it.
