Social media has done this interesting thing for dance where non-dancers (and even dancers sometimes) feel they can criticize and critique an artform they know nothing about. Dance is drenched history. It is not one thing or one way of being. It predates everything that came after it and continues to evolve. Stop putting dance in a box. It’s not just tricks and flips. It’s movement. It’s what music looks like. And if you know anything about dance, you can see what I, and so many of us do, and locate its inflections and inspirations. Dance is art, connection, story, and feeling. It has foundations and rules. [Some rules are meant to be broken.] Don’t let these apps take away your uniqueness. Art is part of our humanity. We don’t all have to like the same things!!! Which means we don’t all have to be the same. THAT IS the power of art.
