This first arrived as a forwarded email/ Send this to ten people within thirty hours or something terrible happens. Obviously I sent it, every kid I knew sent it. . Saturday was HTML day so I went digging through the early web, and I ended up somewhere I did not expect. The chain letter is not an internet invention but rather a sixth century one. They were called Himmelsbrief, letters people claimed had fallen out of heaven, and the terms were identical to the ones in my inbox in 2003: copy it, forward, and prosper. OR break the chain and answer for it. . Researchers who study this have found a pattern in when chain letters flare up, noting that they spike when a society is frightened about the future. . So let’s take a look at where we are: there are more bots online than people; Europol thinks nearly all content could be synthetic by the end of this year; we identify deepfakes at roughly the rate of a coin flip; voice cloning has turned extortion into a phone call that sounds like it is coming from your own family. .
