i worked at a wildlife rehab center and the amount of people that would bring an animal in and say "it was so relaxed and calm every time i held it" like no babe it's paralyzed in fear

one time my dad and i were driving and we found a baby deer hit by a car. it was still alive, its legs were crushed, couldn’t stand, and was bleeding out heavily. my dad took his pistol out and just shot it so it wouldn’t have to suffer in pain anymore. it really traumatized me as a kid because i couldn’t understand why he didn’t try to comfort it, but i got older and realized that it was probably so scared, couldn’t run away, and had no chance at life. what he did was probably the most humane option

this was one of the most heartbreaking realizations of my life — that I am incapable of providing non-domesticated roadkill any solace when they are suffering. The best we can do is to give them space if we aren’t actively & humanely putting them out of their misery.

Not to mention sometimes ppl sit with them dying for hours, in those hours they could’ve called a rehab centre or something and the animal could’ve survived

People forget that most animals actually see humans as mid-tier predators, not “friends” 😂 we are scary creatures… lording over a prey animal like a deer in its last moments causes it to freeze in fear and shock because it can’t do anything
