Gosh, Syd was so amazing. I want to advocate more for my health, but the last time I spoke to a doctor about my anemia and occasional blood in stool, he asked me twice if I was certain the blood I was seeing in my stool wasn't just my period. Then he said I'm too young for a colonoscopy and cancer. I'm 36.

when i was diagnosed with my aggressive form of AML, we had no time to waste for fertility preservation because ultimately i had weeks to live. my oncologist informed me of that information BUT he assured me while the chemotherapy i would initially receive doesn’t typically harm ovarian function, he would put me on an ovarian suppressant (lupron) just in case. later down the road, when i needed a stem cell transplant, he intentionally made a point to safely pause treatment before SCT so that i could do fertility preservation. it was tedious. my platelets barely hung on to do the procedure but i did it and i have a future ahead of me. i’m so endlessly grateful my future was considered 💖

She had hope until the end and she deserved to have that perspective. Her humanity should have been honored. Thanks for sharing this. People are just their diagnosis and their stage of cancer.

I’m sure the doctors didn’t consider her living long enough to have children; however, it’s unbelievable to me they didn’t have that discussion with her. Discussing side effects of any medication prescribed is a basic standard of care. To me, it’s crazy permanent infertility wasn’t discussed with a 22 yof.
