@obidient.movement: Anambra Hausa, Northern Leaders Defend Peter Obi, Reject Claims Of Discrimination Hausa and northern community leaders in Anambra State have rejected allegations that former Governor Peter Obi discriminated against northerners or forced them to obtain identity cards to remain in the state. The community leaders, who spoke in Awka and Onitsha, also dismissed claims that Obi ordered the demolition of a mosque during his tenure as governor. Instead, they said they benefited from Obi’s administration, including through free education, agricultural loans and sponsorship for Hajj. Mahmud Ibrahim, Secretary of the Hausa Community in Onitsha and Northern Community in Anambra and Delta states, said the allegation concerning the mosque was false. According to him, the mosque was demolished in February 2006 during a reprisal linked to the Sharia crisis, before Obi became governor in March 2006. Ibrahim claimed that Obi later visited members of the community who were staying at an Army Barracks and contributed money towards rebuilding the mosque. On the issue of identity cards, he said the northern community itself decided to issue identification cards to its members, while the ANIDS identity card was issued to everyone in Anambra State, including government officials. The traditional ruler of the Hausa community in Awka, Alhaji Garba Haruna, also said his family benefited from Obi’s free education programme and that he personally benefited from the former governor’s Hajj sponsorship. Another community leader, Alhaji Gidado Sidikki, said he received an agricultural loan of ₦10 million under Obi’s administration and claimed that the former governor later paid the loan on behalf of beneficiaries. Sidikki added that his son benefited from Obi’s free education programme and is now pursuing a PhD in China. The leaders described the allegations against Obi as politically motivated, insisting that their relationship with the former governor remained cordial. They also pledged to mobilise northerners living in Anambra to support Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election, expressing optimism about his chances. 👇 What’s your view?
