Part of the deal is that Orpheus is supposed to be a bit of an inversion of the white savior originally. He’s confident and thinks he can save Eurydice… and he can’t. He won’t succeed. And the choice to little guy-ify him infantilizes his fundamental arrogance.

As someone who LOVES autistic Orpheus I agree. I didn’t even pick up on “touched” being autism I thought it meant he was touched by the gods therefore hypersensitive

It also didn’t start this way. The Orpheus we had in workshop was confident… it what made doubt killing him so impactful. I have trouble believing this Orpheus would go to the underword

I will stand by the fact that the worst thing that ever happened to Hadestown was making it to Broadway

Also, I obviously don’t feel like any of these words are bad words because I sent them out loud into a microphone. Unfortunately, content moderation is seemingly at random, and I have to be careful

I agree. I miss Off-Broadway Orpheus. He wasn't autistic, he was an overconfident artist who thought nothing bad would ever happen to him, then reality hits him hard when he realizes what happened to Eurydice.

what do you mean she didn’t want to imagine Statler and Waldorf giving real time feedback on the performance

As an autistic man thats absolutely not whats happening there. Orpheus is autistic coated yes but to me it also shows higher support and social needs autistic representation. I see myself highly in him as a moderate to high support needs man. Its really important to those of us who need a lot of assistance in life to see him and his personality and also his relationship with hermes is very much what my relationship with my support people. This may read as infantilisation to some but autistic people can have aspects the world sees as childish and orpheus has that like many of us do. Thats not on his character thats on people reading his character without higher support needs autism in mind

I thought “touched” meant like, inspired… I didn’t pick up any autistic implications at all. Not that I’m doubting you, in hindsight I can see it now. It’s just interesting to me how people project these traits onto characters that don’t fit with them

Broadway ruined Hadestown for me sand the sets and musicians. Legitimately broadwayified a lovely plot about an arrogant main character learning his actions have consequences. I mourn the day we lost Damon Daunno’s original off-broadway Orpheus to him being in fucking Oklahoma 😭 The rigid way that so many new actors play the character make me upset and I entirely blame Reeve for the standard he set for the character.

I just feel like orpheus' character always has something missing every time I see someone new play him? like theres always something that makes him feel unfinished and I dont fully know why and its nothing to do with the actors but ive never felt as they wrote orpheus as much as they could've

crying, agree, and I've heard people hated the braggadocio Reepheus because he was trying too hard to act like Damon Daunno 😭 personally I just really hate the 'naive little boy' act when Orpheus' tragedy is that he's not present in a crucial moment of his lover's life and she suffers for it, not that 'he's so pure and neurodivergent he can't help it'

i personally call broadway orpheus lobotomy orpheus as i first started listening to hadestown with the new york workshop album and he actually has a personality in that one outside of just “i love eurydice and im working on a song”

best take of all time. one thing I want to add to this discussion is i believe the change to orpheus's character was done to make hadestown less overtly political and more just about ~love~ . if you compare the off-broadway and broadway versions of epic iii it almost completely erases the anticapitalist message and is so childish. orpheus off-broadway was like a principled but naive and flawed communist and now hes autistic.

Thanks for talking about this bc as a woman with autism it pisses me off soooooo much when we act like autistic men are somehow not men in a patriarchy

It’s especially an issue in Reeve’s performance. At times it feels deeply offensive to watch how he makes physical that directive choice.

I personally really love hadestown but this has always been my biggest gripe with the show. I love the songs the cast I saw was wonderful and a lot of the characters are great but Orpheus especially with the “the boy was touched” have always bothered me

To be completely honest, when I first listened to the NYTW version of Orpheus I thought him being kinda an asshole was the whole point, and making him not an asshole ruins some of the messaging. It’s like wait did I understand this show more than the creatives or

I always thought that the “touched by the gods” think was like blessed, my first language isn’t English so I’m don’t really know the other ways it has been referred to certain groups in the past
