Whatever you think your budget is for a gut/reno multiply by 1.5-2x and triple your timeline if you’re gonna do the work yourself or at least a portion of it. I’ve done it twice in NY and am trying for a third

You really need to talk to a pro in this field. Way too many variables to generalize an answer. My neighbor does this for a living in LA if you care for a rec. His house is gorgeous. Look for general contractors and make sure to ask about availability. The Palisades and Eaton fires made some wait times crazy.

If you are going to buy fixer upper make sure you KNOW who you are hiring in terms of contractors because that can be an expense on its own

First time buyer do not buy a fixer-upper. Buy something for your first home that doesn’t need a ton of repairs and just do a little a few things here and there to make it your own.

Jadelyn, that is great. I believe you save with the cost of the house. But how you remodel is where the expense comes across. Overall you can save 30-40%. Just insure you have experienced and knowledgeable people working on your future home. I love remodeling and setting all of the designs etc. I wish you good luck.

There is no black and white answer to that. If you have an expensive taste it will be expensive buying new or fix up just the same though. You’ll mostly save money in fix up if you can do a lot yourself / know contractors who will give you good prices. If you fix up at market value and asap, you won’t save much versus buying it all done.

it can be less expensive, it depends on how bad the conditions of the house are. when you renovate don't be too specific on your taste but think about potential buyers in the future in case you may want to sell it

if you can't do a decent amount of the work yourself you are almost certainly going to end up paying more. I'd focus on something that needs minor tweaks. What you don't know about a fixer upper is the structural issues that will cost 2-10x and potential savings.
