Bald eagles generally mate for life, but “for life” really means for as long as both birds are alive. * If one member of the pair dies, the surviving eagle often finds a new mate, sometimes within weeks or months, especially if it’s before or during the breeding season. * Eagles are strongly attached to their nesting territory as much as to their partner. A widowed eagle often remains at the nest site and attracts or accepts a new mate there. * If the surviving eagle is older or the territory is poor, it may take longer to pair up—or it may not breed again. Eagles do not appear to grieve in the same way humans do, but they may show signs of searching for or calling to their missing mate for a short time. Their behavior is primarily driven by maintaining a territory and successfully reproducing. This ability to form a new pair bond helps ensure that a productive nesting territory doesn’t remain unused for long. In areas with healthy eagle populations, a vacant mate is often replaced relatively quickly.
