Later that afternoon, they ended up sitting on opposite ends of the couch, watching a movie. Orm had chosen it. Lingling hadn't really cared what they watched, so she'd let her decide. For the first half hour, neither of them spoke much. Orm was completely absorbed in the movie while Lingling occasionally looked at the screen, then at her book. And occasionally at Orm. Then, somewhere between one scene and another, Orm spoke again. "P'Ling?" "Hmm?" "Can I ask you something?" Lingling looked over. "You just did." Orm laughed. "Seriously." "I'm listening." Orm hesitated. "Why do you live alone?" Lingling didn't answer immediately. She looked toward the television, then back at Orm. "I've lived alone for a long time." "Because you wanted to?" "Partly." Lingling paused. "And partly because I didn't have much of a choice." Orm looked at her. Lingling continued. "My parents weren't around." Her voice remained calm. There was no bitterness in it. She was simply stating the facts. "I had to learn how to work, take care of myself, and make decisions on my own." Orm listened quietly. "I didn't want them worrying about me either." Lingling gave a small shrug. "So I got used to it." Orm looked down at her hands. "I guess we have that in common." Lingling glanced at her. "You've been living alone for years too." "Yeah." Lingling studied her for a moment. "Why?" Orm was quiet. She hadn't expected the question to come back to her so directly. "I just..." She looked toward the television. "I wanted to." Lingling waited. Orm sighed. "It's complicated." Lingling nodded. "I'm not asking you to explain if you don't want to." Orm looked at her. There was no pressure in Lingling's voice. Just an invitation. After a moment, Orm spoke. "I guess I wanted to learn how to survive on my own." Lingling's eyebrows lifted slightly. "Survive?" Orm smiled faintly. "Not literally." "I know." Orm pulled her knees closer. "I just didn't want to grow up depending on someone else for everything. I mean, I have to learn to stand on my own someday anyway... So why not start learning it early, right?" "Good point." The conversation slowly faded after that. The movie continued playing in the background. Orm shifted slightly, getting more comfortable on her end of the couch. A few minutes passed. Then ten. Lingling eventually noticed that Orm hadn't said anything for a while. When she looked over, Orm was already asleep. Her head had tilted slightly to the side, her arms loosely folded against herself. Lingling stared at her for a moment and smiled faintly. This was the same person who could barely stay still during the day. The same person who talked constantly whenever she was comfortable. Now she was completely quiet. Lingling picked up the remote and lowered the volume. She considered waking her. Instead, she went to the bedroom and came back with a blanket. She draped it over Orm before sitting down again.
