It is as if nature produces different variations ahead of time and tests what might actually work. Millions of years from now, if the conditions on the Earth’s surface change dramatically, perhaps humans could evolve to have several pairs of limbs, like spiders, in order to move more efficiently across the ground. Maybe this is also the kind of abstract idea that the author of the Voynich Manuscript was exploring in his drawings. Perhaps he was trying to imagine what plants and other living organisms might become in the future. Maybe he simply noticed certain deviations from the familiar forms found in nature and used them as inspiration for his unusual illustrations.
