I've been saying it as "you won't be replaced because a robot can do your job, you'll be replaced because your boss thinks a robot can do your job (because your boss doesn't know how to do your job and is being told by a robot that it can do your job)." The upper-management classes are absolutely in thrall to AI addiction and are using it for everything because their jobs don't create value, so they think AI can do everything. And they're asking it about everything you do because they don't know how to evaluate if you are good at your job. And the AI telling them they're geniuses and your work can be improved this many ways for this many reasons. And eventually the question of whether they really need you is going to be asked of the AI and it's going to "want" to please your boss and tell them that your job can be done with AI. writing that paragraph gave me a headache. but I think that scenario repeated over and over and over is how millions of people will eventually lose their jobs and there will be catastrophe.

Totally agreed. Though I don’t see AI as what does the damage so much as it is what finally accelerates the way we damage our world to the point we cannot ignore it anymore.

China thinks long term, we think in terms of the next 4 years. And after those 4 years they undo the last 4 years. We cannot carry out any long term plan. Also, capitalism has been making things worse and worse since its inception, ai is just the next step in the process

And the question still remains. How do we define value and purpose for the new age?

As an engineer adding robots to the factory floor, humans are both cheaper and less quality, not cheaper but more quality. Humans have always been the largest source of quality fails.

Exactly. Just as Marx would have argued, I think, or as at least as one analyst I’ve seen has argued Marx would have asserted; and I don’t mean to reduce you to Marx. Your analysis is original and elegant and so vital. Thank you as always. We are living on the verge of an abyss. You are helping to prevent us from tumbling in.

I think the popular support for the Chinese model is, actually, suggesting that it is better and fairer. How else would you read survey data on support for their state's various policies and implementation pipelines?

Your first sentence is 100% true and the point people miss. It isn’t that they’re smarter, it’s that they’re cheaper

The framing is wrong here. Sometimes AI does a sh*tty job, depends on the quality of the output. Sometimes it does a fantastic job. Can most people discern the difference? Thats what concerns me most

I just assumed it was to complete blame all the problems on a computer as to avoid litigation/jail time for the insane shit they will make it “decide.”

It's possible or maybe even likely that the portion of time when AI does the same job but shittier is relatively short, before it just does the same job but better. How many years? 5? 10?

The center for humane technology did an interview with the ethicist Michael Sandel where he said much the same thing, at least a year ago. I think this is true.

Man I wonder which country considers its workers’ wellbeing a critical concern of the state. And which only talks about it.

We can't have a constitutional amendment until we have a representative democracy, and we can have a representative democracy when the people don't know it because they don't think the government can do anything right and the other half I've been convinced voting one color or the other will make a difference. even without AI late Stage capitalism is headed for fascism. it's a really really big ship to turn around, a big train to stop

This is a great perspective and understanding of the 2 positions. The Chinese are simply more efficient more focused. they are basically acting as 1. we are 1000 going in opposing directions. I see in this a bigger picture of systemic failure here over the last 50 yrs. business is incapable of governance as it is a situation of opposing obligations and goals if that makes sense.

You can see that in how PMs make products these days. Shit is fine, if it fast and doesn’t lead to a drop off in conversion. Depressing, really.
