@drnataliejonespsyd: Replying to @pearls_icast Children should not have to pay rent or be labeled a deadbeat. It can be helpful to deconstruct ideas around money and helping your child. #money #parents #parenting #adultchildren #drnataliejonespsydlpcc
I thought I was doing something wrong because people were charging their kids rent at 18! I’m talking about people who make six figures.

Why should the child pay rent if the parent consented/accepted to have the child ? The child didn’t ask to live . These types of parents confuse me

The truth is those parents are angry/bitter bc they didn’t get that type of love/help from their parents so they don’t want to give what they didn’t get. Most secretly want the child to pay & CONTINUE paying for things to the point the parent doesn’t have to use their own funds to take care of themselves anymore in a broken backwards attempt to get “taken care of” to make up for the void of not having nurturing parents

Of course not that’s not part of the convo most parents just want the $ they feel kids owe them!! But, yet parents fail them on so many levels.

If we're evaluating parental choices according to “What is this teaching the adult child?”, then let's apply that question consistently. If all you're doing is providing free housing, what financial lesson are you actually teaching?

🇨🇦The Patients Perspective :
I think by a certain age if they are home they should pay some rent (very low rent) to help train and ease them into society once they become an adult. But… I’m fine that time that they come and go once they are an adult. They just have to be quiet coming in not waking the household. They would have to learn that with roommates paying triple more.

i come from a culture where many families have multigenerational households. this usually works to support the entire family, so if a young person is saving to build something, they’re not expected to pay, but a grown man just living at home, they are absolutely expected to pay, and i think it’s detrimental for men and the entire family if they don’t (save for exceptional circumstances, obviously). for women it really depends why they are living with their family at that age, sometimes they are a caretaker, or have small children, etc.
