I once had a dev explain to me what the variables t and ot were. "thing and other thing". later in there was a yot. "yet another thing"

I’ve seen bad code, but I’ve never met an engineer who wrote bad code for job security. It’s usually because deadlines and requirements keep randomly changing and they have to hack and scramble.

I have a colleague like that. I reviewed his code once and it took me like 10 comments to convince him to rename service.Refresh() to service.RefreshTemplates(), since it refreshed templates cache 🤦♂️his answer was literally: “it’s understandable from the context that template service is refreshed”. Like WHAT DOES IT EVEN MEAN… and he’s not a bad developer just a very stubborn and selfish one. I always tell people, extra words and letters cost nothing but it make work so easier to the next developer

it's self documenting, the code:
void * (*(*fp1)(int))[10];
float (*(*fp2)(int,int,float))(int);

I've been working on the same project I started when I started programming and the AMOUNT OF TIMES I've read a snippet of code like this and wanted to strangulate the individual who made it..... until I realize it was me 3 years ago...

I have spent a few weeks writing scripts that generate documentation automatically and update themselves when they commit hash is newer than the metadata file. I will not suffer my systems to be undocumented, and every commit my devs need to have documentation that links to the story number

I've always left doc blocks and always used super long, verbose variable names. Used to argue with people about it for years, eventually just literally started telling people to eat my ass if they didn't like it. People still text me from previous jobs years later saying "thank you"

Like 20 years ago I worked on a system where comments in code were NOT ALLOWED. It took me one week to map ON PAPER all the functions and variables meaning (all max 3 chars length). I hated that job. And guess what, it was a system to generate tax payments.
