YOU DECIDE… A firefighter has sent ChaseTV this fascinating footage captured during the recent fire on Cannock Chase, showing a rapidly rotating column forming close to the blaze. But what exactly are we looking at? It could be a fire whirl, commonly nicknamed a “firenado”. These can develop when intense heat from a fire causes rapidly rising air to begin rotating, potentially drawing smoke, ash and burning material into the vortex. But there is another possibility. Dust devils can also form over very hot, dry ground when heated air rises rapidly and begins to rotate, picking up dust and debris.
