⚠️⚡ NATASHA WRIGHT MINISTRIES | MINISTRY NEWS REPORT 📅 August 21, 2026 ⚡ MORE THAN A WEEK WITHOUT POWER — WHAT HAPPENED IN NORTHWEST INDIANA? In our earlier report, we told you about families across Northwest Indiana dealing with prolonged power outages following the destructive August 11 storms. So what caused an outage this severe—and how are people managing? 🌪️ WHAT HAPPENED? A powerful derecho swept through northern Indiana, producing destructive straight-line winds. In Gary, winds reportedly reached around 99 mph. Trees came crashing down, utility poles and power lines were damaged, roads were blocked, and portions of the electrical system suffered extensive destruction. NIPSCO described it as the largest outage event in the utility's history. ⚡ WHY HAS RESTORATION TAKEN SO LONG? This wasn't simply a matter of reconnecting a few wires. Crews have had to clear trees and debris, replace damaged poles, repair lines and rebuild portions of the electrical infrastructure before power can safely be restored. In Gary alone, restoration has involved replacing hundreds of utility poles, including major transmission poles. Hundreds of line workers have been involved in the massive recovery effort. 🏠 HOW ARE PEOPLE MANAGING? After days without electricity, everyday necessities have become major concerns. 🥫 Food has spoiled. Families have lost refrigerated and frozen groceries. 📱 People need places to charge phones and access Wi-Fi. Community locations and operating businesses have become important resources. 🍽️ Organizations, businesses and volunteers are providing meals and supplies to residents who need help. ⛽ Some families are using generators, but that also means finding and paying for fuel. 🧺 Residents have been sharing information about where to find food, ice, charging stations, laundromats, Wi-Fi and other necessities. 🏫 Schools and family routines have been disrupted, while businesses without electricity have faced lost sales and workers may lose hours. Think about that. One storm can suddenly affect electricity, food, communication, employment, education and household finances at the same time. 👀 WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THIS? Most of us flip a switch without thinking twice about whether the lights will come on. But situations like this remind us how dependent modern life has become on electricity—and how quickly everyday life can change when critical infrastructure is damaged. 📖 Proverbs 22:3 reminds us that a prudent person sees danger and takes precautions. Preparedness isn't fear. It's wisdom. Keep flashlights available. Keep portable chargers powered when severe weather threatens. Have some nonperishable food and water available. Know where you could safely go during an extended outage. ❤️ AND PLEASE HELP YOUR NEIGHBOR. If you have electricity while somebody else doesn't, ask what they need. Maybe it's a meal. Maybe it's ice. Maybe they need to charge a phone. Maybe an elderly neighbor simply needs someone to check on them. Sometimes ministry looks like simply saying: “What can I do to help?” 🙏 Please continue praying for the families recovering across Northwest Indiana and for the utility crews working to restore electricity.
