Direct entry NP programs are terrifying. If you want to go directly into a provider role- go to PA school (and even then, PA schools require some form of medical experience). NP school shouldn’t be treated as a shortcut.

Thank you!!! I advocate experience at minimum 2-3. And to me is bare bones minimum. You need to see things before you take the plunge into something with greater responsibility.

1 year of new grad icu experience is typically only 6-8 months of actual non-orientation experience where you’re practicing independently. And in that time you’re majorly learning on the more stable patients on the unit. So to think 1 year is adequate experience for advanced practice is insane to me.

Truthfully, one year in the ICU is not enough. And as a nurse, I’m actually advocating for you to give yourself more time to learn, grow, and figure out who you are as a nurse. Advanced practice is taking that nursing foundation and adding a provider-level mindset and skill set. You need a strong foundation before you build on it.

NP programs need higher education and clinical standards. paramedics do two full years of full time education to practice in one specific area (pre hospital care) yet some NPs do a similar length program to practice independently in extremely broad fields… the lack of standardization is a HUGE problem. you have outstanding programs and then there are literal online programs. it’s ridiculous

THIS!!! As an ICU nurse who’s had many coworkers leave the ICU for CRNA school after 1 year or less, I think it speaks more on the programs than the applicants themselves :/

This is the truth because you need to develop muscle memory, you need to build those critical thinking skills, and you need a few tricks up your sleeve when everything hits the fan & trust it will hit the fan! Even seeing certain things in healthcare…going to advance practitioner & never doing postmortem care or bagging a patient is crazy

Thank you!!!! I’ve been a psych RN for 2.5 years with another 5 years experience as a tech prior to becoming a nurse. I want to be a psych NP and not many people understand why I won’t apply for programs yet. I want at least one more year of experience before starting to look at programs. But now I’m getting worried because so many of these programs are pushing new grad enrollment hard, and that really makes me question the quality of the programs in my area. Sigh

As a new nurse that EVENTUALLY wants to go to CRNA school I'm currently a nurse at a level 3 icu- how long should I stay where I'm at and is level 1 necessary or is level 2 enough? I don't live close to many level 1 icus without it being a 40+ minute drive. I was hoping for at least 5 years of experience before even thinking about going.

not everything is one size fits all. not every school in icu translates to being a crna. Some people with high years of experience just clock in and clock out, they don’t know the why behind what they do , the MOA for medications. Some new grads going in keeping a journal of all their patients, studying outside of work. beginning CRNA school with a year of experience may not be the best choice for everyone but applying with 5+ years of experience DOES NOT make you better

The amount of people, most of them nurses and one NP, have told me “ok NP next!” Mind you I just graduated in May with my ADN, not even BSN💀. Absolutely tf not. I do not understand this mindset of straight to NP.

I have such a distaste for new grad nurses going straight into a DND program. These people are essentially going to be in charge of your healthcare and they don’t even know the treatment modalities that people use for all of their complex illnesses. I believe nurses should be nurses for at least a minimum of five years at bedside
