As a science teacher all students need to access information in all styles to help them completely understand the concept.

I’m a teacher. I know it’s bs. But I put it in my reports because my admin is incompetent and they love buzz words

Teachers believing in learning styles ends up helping because when they teach it three different ways they teach it three different times, and the repetition is good for learning

Instructional designer here. We’ve known this for years. It’s the use of multiple styles together that reinforce learning best.

One thing that IS true is that EVERYONE learns better if multiple of these categories are involved. You are much more likely to learn something if you see, hear AND do.

As a teacher, it is my job to provide lessons in as many styles as possible. Because if you do all 4(or whatever) more will stick because the student learned it 4 ways.

it's so crazy that we are literally presented with learning styles as a FACT that we need to take into account at teaching universities. they were used as an explanation as to why we need different types of semantisation when presenting new vocab units. As opposed to just saying that students learn better when there are multiple channels through which they get information which IS true 🥱

My dad was a strong believer that you learned best by doing. Which is why he threw me in the pool when I was two years old, to teach himself CPR.

This seems a bit strawmanish. I have a degree in education, and I can tell you that it’s not, and never has been a “you are THIS.” It’s a loose approximation about inclination, and not at all a rigid box. Teachers deal with psychology, which we all know is made up of a lot of stuff which isn’t exactly quantifiable like we wish it was.

My doctor of education program literally had an entire course on this sort of thing… not once did they present it as a theory or anything with its effectiveness or literary backing in question… interesting

I find this hard to believe. If this were true, then every classroom could be just all lecture, all the time. We all know that a lot of students would struggle. Good teachers present information in a multitude of ways—lecture, visual aids, written text, hands-on demonstrations, color coding, manipulative teaching aids, etc. For example, a geometry teacher can say, “two perpendicular lines are always on the same plane” but that doesn’t mean every student gets that concept. If the teacher holds up two pens crossed at right angles and twists them all directions, there will be kids who will say, oh, now I get it.

I've pointed this out in a staff meeting, only to have my administrator 1) acknowledge that it's bunk, and 2) insist that we accommodate students' learning styles in the same breath.

my son has a learning disability and here's what I know about learning...if you're interested in it, you will learn it. if you are not interested in it, it will take longer for you to absorb the information.

Thank you!!!!! My freshman year of college we had to that a class about this and they taught us how to identify our learning style. Then my final year of underground I learned in a child psychology class that this was all bs.
