Collaborating with @east.art_elijah to create the first print in the world of wild African Grey parrot chicks: Tembo, Twiga, and Chui. They are my wild soul family, and the first chicks to fly free from this tree. I also have a GoFundMe set up. The chicks in this video lost their lives when their nesting tree fell in a storm, but they would have been poached if the tree didn’t fall. This is my personal experience on the ground with African Grey parrot chicks over the course of many years. I was unable to get help from international wildlife organizations to protect them, so I befriended local communities on my own to quietly listen and learn from them, and create solutions to keep the chicks safe. Greys are endangered and nearing extinction because of the illegal pet trade, but also for their feathers, blood, and skulls used in superstitious practices for luck and wealth in West Africa. It is all illegal and extremely cruel. Entire flocks are netted on the ground and their feathers are crudely cut with machetes. Upwards of 70% die after capture, and yet this was called sustainable trade before it became illegal in 2016. The word “sustainable”should never be used in association with such cruelty. Greys have the intelligence level of a 5-year old human child, and they deserve just as much love as is showered on elephants, tigers, rhinos, pangolins, and other iconic wildlife that already receive mass public support.
