I used to remember telephone numbers of friends and neighbors and family - where has that storage capacity gone ? That was a true human superpower

I saw a video of a young man who couldn't comprehend how ppl remembered how to spell thousands of words. he was asking for specifics if how its possible. it reminded me of hearing ppl talk about how they dont believe old buildings with intricate carvings and murals were done by humans. 🤦♀️we've all been dumbed down more and more with each generation.

Older folks will recall when we used to memorize our friends and family's phone numbers. Since our phones have an address book now, nobody bothers to remember phone numbers.
Are we worse off for it?

back in the '80s before cell phones I had to memorize every phone number of every person I knew. today I can't even tell you my sister's phone number because it's stored in my phone and I don't have to remember it.

Just like phone numbers in your contacts. No one remembers anyone’s phone number nowadays.

This should be a warning on all social media & AI. Just like on the cigarette packaging. It should pop up as frequently as the pop-up ads.

When I was a young man. I had more than 50 phone numbers memorized. I now have 5. Smart phones have been amazing at handing us information at our fingertips. But it's also slowly been robing us of our intellectual capacity.

I was taught in the 1970s that the brain is a sponge that requires input to stay malleable. If there is not input, the the brain deteriorates. because of this information I have tried to always learn something new every day.

that explains how if I write down directions to a destination I can recall them without looking at them again, if I use GPS, I don't remember how to get there again
