The Boeing–Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche was a cutting-edge, two-seat reconnaissance and attack helicopter developed for the U.S. Army in the 1990s as the world's first fully stealthy rotorcraft . Built primarily from radar-absorbent composites, it featured a five-blade main rotor, an eight-blade shrouded tail rotor, and a retractable 20mm cannon, with internal weapons bays that could carry Hellfire anti-tank missiles or Stinger air-to-air missiles . Powered by two LHTEC T800 turboshaft engines delivering over 1,400 shaft horsepower each, the Comanche measured just over 14 meters long, had a maximum takeoff weight of roughly 7,800 kg, and boasted a top speed of over 320 km/h with a range of approximately 1,450 miles . The program began in 1983, with the prototype first flying on January 4, 1996, and the Army originally planned to acquire around 1,200 aircraft to replace its aging fleets of AH-1 Cobras and OH-58 Kiowas . However, despite its groundbreaking design and the development of two prototypes, the program was cancelled in February 2004 due to ballooning costs (over $8 billion spent) and a shifting military doctrine that favored cheaper and more expendable unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for reconnaissance and attack missions . As a result, no Comanches ever entered operational service with any military force, and the remaining prototypes are now museum pieces, though some of the advanced technologies developed for the project were later integrated into the AH-64 Apache and other helicopters . #sikorsky #rah66comanche #usarmy
