The Halo 3 story still pretty confirms that humans were forerunners. The writers of Halo 3 even stated this via a tweet. It was the people in charge of the terminals that completely changed that for no reason. Frank O’Connor who was with Bungie at the time was the biggest pusher of changing the lore, before literally leaving a year after Halo 3s launch. And unfortunately, once this change happened, the books about the forerunners came out, which changed the lore completely.

Actually bungie intended for humans to be forerunner even in Halo 3, the only things that indicate humans are not forerunner is a terminal written by a single guy who’s story ideas kept being rejected, who became story lead after 343 took over. All 343 is basically fan fiction

*original Bungie games in general, the only time in Halo 3 that it’s mentioned is those terminals which weren’t checked by Joe Staten, the creative director at the time, other parts of Halo 3 do imply they are the same, and the books released around the time that WERE checked and approved by the creative director DID state humans to be forerunner, so while YES there is 1 canon, 343 did make a soft retcon about human/forerunner relations

The terminals were written by a different team from the main story writers. And the main cannon of halo3 states in a cutscene humans are forerunners. If you cherry pick information please make sure you understand people will call you on it. It’s annoying how 343 ignored everything in the original trilogy that pointed to the humans are forerunners plot added. This is why many believe it’s a separate time line from 4 onwards.

Technically there are 3 canons. I personally drop all books into trash bin because games are supposed to be the main source of lore and no book will over took it. The same reason I hate Infinity because half of this game campaign was stuck into books. Not to mention gap between 5th game and Infinite is enormous and required more books
