We are disappointed. And we are watching closely. On the evening of August 14, 2026, a uniformed Citrus County Sheriff’s Office deputy walked into our Target store in Lecanto. He was supposed to be there on official business — notifying staff about suspicious activity in the area. Instead, according to the Sheriff’s Office and multiple witnesses, he approached a female Target employee at the customer service counter, made repeated inappropriate sexual comments, hooked his finger into the metal loop of the collar-style necklace she was wearing, and physically pulled her toward him. He then continued the remarks and asked her age. The woman looked visibly uncomfortable. She walked away. He followed her past the counter before finally leaving. He never activated his body camera — a direct violation of department policy. That same night, a complaint was made. By the next day, Target’s video evidence confirmed what the victim and witnesses already reported. On August 20, 2026, former Deputy Troy Taylor was arrested on a misdemeanor battery charge and immediately fired upon arrival at the Citrus County Detention Facility. Sheriff David Vincent did not mince words: “It’s hard to properly convey my level of disappointment in Deputy Taylor. His actions violate public trust in law enforcement and do not represent the great work or the men and women here at the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office. I have zero tolerance for those who decide to tarnish the reputation of the Sheriff’s Office and the profession I care deeply about.” As a community, we want that zero-tolerance standard to mean something. We want every woman working late shifts at Target, Publix, Walmart, or any store in this county to feel safe — not targeted by the very people wearing the badge. We also want to be clear: the overwhelming majority of CCSO deputies are professionals who show up every day and do the hard, thankless work of keeping us safe. One man’s disgraceful choices do not erase their service. But one man’s disgraceful choices cannot be excused, minimized, or quietly swept aside either. This is not about politics. This is not about “all cops.” This is about one specific incident, one specific deputy, and one specific failure of respect and professionalism while on duty in our community. The victim deserves to be heard and protected. The rest of us deserve a Sheriff’s Office that acts quickly and transparently when one of its own crosses the line. We thank Sheriff Vincent and the command staff for moving without delay. We thank the witnesses who spoke up. And we stand with the Target employee who should never have had to experience this at work. Citrus County is better than this. Our deputies, as a whole, are better than this.
