I do think the HIV crisis has done a lot to make bears the the thing it is now, back then suddenly everyone was dropping like flies and being chubby became synonymous with “not infected” thus desirable. I’d love for an elder gay gives their opinion on this thought.

Mr. San Francisco Bear 2024 here, just wanted to say thanks for this video. I also would say that we fall into the second camp. The creation of the bear community was in opposition to the stereotype thin and muscular physique that was popular at the time. Not only that but it was and can be very inclusive. Our community was an early home for trans men.

Sadly the bear scene is also very divisive and cultish, most of them ended up with mean girl behaviors like the ones they claimed to be rejecting.
