I’ve noticed something lately. The moment you mention AI in a room full of designers, the temperature changes. Some get curious. Others get defensive. A few quietly assume the craft is under attack. Let me share how I actually use it. Recently, I had a concept in my head. The first image was simple. It had the basic structure, but it didn’t fully express what I wanted. The mood wasn’t strong enough. The depth wasn’t there. It felt like a sketch, not a statement. Instead of abandoning the idea, I used AI as a conversion tool. I fed the first image into a system and guided it toward the second version I envisioned. I adjusted the composition. Refined the lighting. Controlled the perspective. I described what needed to change and what must remain. What came out wasn’t random magic. It was directed execution. And that’s the point many people miss. AI did not wake up with a concept. It did not feel the story behind the design. It did not understand the audience. I did. AI responded to direction. Design still started with human intention. There’s a difference between pressing a button and designing. What I did wasn’t replacing creativity. It was accelerating translation. I had the vision. AI helped me move from version one to version two faster, cleaner, and with more experimental freedom. Think about it like this: when Photoshop first appeared, some traditional artists said it would kill design. When stock images became popular, people feared originality would disappear. When Canva entered the market, many predicted the end of professional designers. Yet here we are. The industry didn’t die. It evolved. AI is not a threat to designers. It is a threat to designers who refuse to grow. A tool has no ambition. It has no taste. It has no cultural awareness. It does not understand brand psychology or emotional nuance. It can generate, but it cannot decide what matters. That responsibility still belongs to us. In my workflow, AI is like a fast assistant. It helps me test ideas quickly. It helps me visualize variations. It helps me convert imagination into drafts. But the final judgment? The refinement? The storytelling? That’s human work. The real danger is not AI. The real danger is staying static in a moving industry. Design has always been about solving problems visually. If a tool helps you solve them better, faster, or more creatively, then it becomes part of the craft. The pencil didn’t destroy painting. The camera didn’t destroy art. AI will not destroy design. But it will change how we work. So instead of fighting the wave, learn to ride it. Master the fundamentals. Understand composition, typography, color psychology, branding. Then use AI strategically. Direct it. Control it. Improve it. Make it serve your vision. Because in the end, the designer who thinks will always outlast the tool that generates. #CapCut #AI #nigeria #Ray #designer
